About the event

We invite you to the first, after the summer break, lecture from the series “Here they lived, here they lived. Stories of the Jewish inhabitants of Gleiwitz” by Małgorzata Lichecka, dedicated to the addresses of Gliwice and their Jewish inhabitants. The lecture will take place on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at the Memorial House of the Jews of Upper Silesia at 17:00.

“Gebr. Barasch. The Barasch Brothers” - this inscription has been on the building at the current address of Victory 10 for more than 35 years. The oldest department store in Gliwice, owned by Georg and Arthur Barasch, was most likely opened in 1903. And it was one of the few family-owned department stores operating in Germany. Their story is an example of thinking outside the box about business, also in the category of competition and advertising. We will look into the temple of commerce and the palace of goods, making a journey from Wrocław, through Gliwice, all the way to Berlin,” says Małgorzata Lichecka.

Admission to the meeting is free, the number of places is limited. We invite you to travel together in time and space!

Address. The important thing in this story. It all starts with him. It is a kind of code by which we can decipher, and infer, the fate of specific people. In this case, the Jewish residents of Gleiwitz O.S. Their lives were permanently connected with the city, here they made their careers, here they grew up, from here they set off to conquer the world. People of blood and blood, with biographies so rich that today they would become the canvas of films dense with twists and turns. During the monthly meetings at the Upper Silesian Jewish Memorial House, we will bring this world to life, we will set it in motion, we will look into the salons, laboratories, shops, we will sit in the gardens, in the offices, in the offices. We will travel many routes, hiking with heroes and heroines. On these tours we will meet the coal princess, a gardener who was not afraid of experiments, a young chemist with business DNA, a lawyer with a social fervor.

Małgorzata Lichecka - journalist, activist, passionate about history and architecture. Author of more than 500 interviews, many journalistic and historical articles in the local weekly “Nowiny Gliwickie” and the monthly “Śląsk”. Co-leader of the informal group “Gliwice for Schabik”, organizer of many historical walks.
