11th UFF - Closing Gala + silent film with music by DAGADANA

DAGADANA plays live to Aleksandr Dovzhenko's film | Closing Gala of the 11th UKRAINE! FF

11th edition of UKRAINE! The Film Festival will end with a unique meeting of Ukrainian silent cinema with contemporary music. Oleksandr Dovzhenko's 1927 “Diplomatic Courier's Folder” (“Sumka dipkur'ra”) will appear on the screen, to which the original music will be performed live by the Polish-Ukrainian band DAGADANA. After the screening, the band will also play a short concert set.

“The Diplomatic Courier's Briefcase” is one of Oleksandr Dovzhenko's early films, made at the Odessa label VUFKU. Inspired by real events, the story of couriers carrying diplomatic mail takes the form of a dynamic adventure cinema with visible influences of German expressionism. Dovzhenko himself appears in the film in the episodic role of a ship smoker.

DAGADANA has been exploring Polish and Ukrainian culture for 18 years, combining traditional music with jazz, fusion, experimental electronics and art pop. In his work, he goes back to the old songs and traditions of both countries, finding similarities and differences between them and translating them into modern musical language.

In 2027, the band's latest album “Lumen” will be released, the title of which symbolizes the inner light.

DAGADANA has played more than 1,000 concerts in 34 countries, performing both in unobvious places — in the desert, on the raft or in the mine — as well as on the stages of festivals such as Glastonbury, Virada Cultural and Open'er. The voices of Daga Gregorowicz and Dana Vynnytska can also be heard in the song “Autumn — Dance” from the soundtrack to the film “Peasants”.

During the gala, the musician of DAGADANA will meet the almost century-old painting of Dovzhenko, creating a modern interpretation of the classics of Ukrainian cinema.
