In his film, Lech Majewski opens up the world of Jacek Malczewski, a painter-symbolist who painted Poland at the turn of the 20th century — a country that did not exist on the map at the time. Its territory was divided between Russia, Austria-Hungary and Prussia. Exploring the phantasmagoric imagination of the painter in a visual dialogue without words, Majewski creates his own vision of Polish history over the past two centuries. Characters from Malczewski's canvases march through decades of history, fight and flee from under successive yokes. They become nomads traversing Siberia and the endless fields to finally arrive at a modern, urbanized reality immersed in apathetic consumption.
