“Sanguma's breath. Papua New Guinea” is a travel-educational lecture combining anthropology, reportage and reflection on human rights. During the trip, the authors talked with the inhabitants about their daily lives, the problems and changes caused by globalization, neocolonization and the influence of external cultural patterns. This is a story about one of the most culturally diverse (over 850 languages!) and naturally places on Earth, a delightful place, but at the same time facing rapid social, economic and environmental changes and the stereotypes that exist about it.
It is based on a three-month expedition, which is part of the projects carried out by the authors in the Amazon and Oceania. The purpose of this expedition was to examine whether ancient traditions, rituals, beliefs and practices, including those related to magic and witchcraft (sanguma), are still present in the life of the community and what is the state of the natural environment, especially in the context of the expansion of Chinese and Western companies.
Anna Sidor and Bartosz Przepiórkowski participated in rituals, funeral feasts and ceremonies, were admitted to clans on the Trobriand Islands and visited the communities of Bargam, Garus, Maugak, Yano, Enga and numerous tribes of the Gulf province. During the trip, they also climbed the highest mountains of the country: Mt Wilhelm (the highest peak of Papua New Guinea) and Mt Giluwe (the highest volcano in Oceania from the Crown of Volcanoes of the Earth).
Awards and distinctions: Tony Halik Award, nominations for the Colossus Award and for the Golden Footprint Award.
Bartek Przepiórkowski — traveler and photographer documenting everyday life, traditions and relationships in local communities, as well as the nature of places off the beaten track. Lover of markets in remote regions of the world. Currently co-creator of Storm in the Tropics.
