All the rest is noise. Cello, horns and barking dogs
One apartment, three women at different stages of life, an interview that does not quite go according to plan, a male ego and... hype. These are the main ingredients from which the Mexican director Nicolás Pereda builds his film.
Noise as a hero
The eponymous buzz is born from street noises, the sounds of neighborhood conversations, the honking of horns, the barking of dogs and trying to break through this insistent background of cello sounds. Sound design is so important in Pereda's film that he was even named one of the protagonists. But the noise that the protagonists have to deal with All the rest is noise, also has a metaphorical meaning — it is created, according to the director himself, by expectations and social pressure.
A mockery of artistic buffoonery
The apartment in which the action takes place belongs to Tere — a composer and cellist. Tere lends her place to a friend, Rozie — also a composer — who is about to give her first television interview. The interview, which will encounter obstacles from the beginning, not only in the form of noises - there will be interruptions in the electricity supply, and Tere's daughter - Louisa will also join the conversation. Mother and daughter are brilliant, ironic and without pity pierce the balloon of artistic gagging - because All the rest is also a comedy about the world of art, its hypocrisy and sexist stereotypes prevailing in it. Pereda's institutional language of art is represented by men: interview, authority, big names, status. Women have music, but also everyday life — children, housing, neighbors, electricity, dogs, conversations and ordinary life. Buzz.
However, Pereda does not joke, but rather builds a story with subtle irony based on absurdities and situational awkwardness and, above all, dialogues, which in a review from the Berlinale called “the beating heart of the film”.
Eight Days of Photography
The film took eight days to shoot, and the apartment where it was created belongs to one of the director's friends and is really located in a very noisy area - so much so that the creators considered changing the location. The main roles are played by actors from the theatre collective Lagartijas tiradas al sol, who constantly collaborate with Pereda, appearing in All the rest is hype under their own names. This treatment makes the form of the film even closer to reality.
