About the event

Mikołaj Trzaska, one of the most important Polish jazzmen and composers of film music, will receive the Film Award of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship during the Fonomo Music & Film Festival. After the ceremony, the laureate will meet with the audience, and the conversation will be led by Marcin Szymczak. The event will end with a screening of the documentary “The End of the World” by Monika Pawluczuk with music by Trzaska.

Listen to the image

He has already encountered the film Trzaska as a saxophonist of the Yass Love - the band's songs appeared on the soundtrack of Olaf Lubaszenka's film Sztos. In 2009 he composed music for the House of Evil, which marked the beginning of his long-term collaboration with Wojciech Smarzowski. In the filmography of Mikołaj Trzaska we will find, among others, Róża, Pod Mocný Ánioł, Klar, Volyn and Dom dobro. Three of these films, including the most recent Good House, won the composer Orła — the Polish Film Award. The music for Under the Strong Angel won the first prize at the 39th Festival of Polish Feature Films in Gdynia.

The creator himself calls the process of creating music for the film “listening to the picture.” Perhaps it is precisely in this approach that the secret of the strength of Trzaska's composition lies — his music follows the characters, becoming more than an illustration.

For the Love of Cinema

Trzaska's cinematic achievements are only a part — though extremely significant — of his work. He started in the already mentioned Yass Love, later collaborated with the most outstanding representatives of improvised music from all over the world, created his own bands and projects, together with his wife he runs the record label Kilogram Records. It is a career in which jazz, avant-garde, improvisation and composed music constantly meet each other. And it is precisely about how these worlds meet in the cinema that it will be possible to talk during the meeting with the laureate.

Finally, “The End of the World”

After the conversation, Monika Pawluczuk's “The End of the World” will be shown — an intimate documentary set during one night. In different places of the big city, stories of people seeking contact with another human are intertwined. Some call the ambulance, others the night radio studio, and somewhere in between these conversations comes the question of the eponymous end of the world.

The music of Trzaska does not try to tell this story. Rather, he is another voice in this nightly tale — and a good excuse to immediately hear how his thinking about the film works in practice after a conversation with the composer.
