Was a democratic departure missed in 1989/90? In BERLIN GLOBAL, experiences from the transformation period meet young perspectives.
In 1989, people in the GDR overcame the SED dictatorship. The “New Constitution” working group from the Central Round Table discussed democracy, freedom and participation and presented a draft constitution in 1990. There was no broad debate about this.
Which opportunities for democratic renewal were not used? And does that contribute to today's dissatisfaction?
Sabine Bergmann-Pohl, former President of the first freely elected People's Chamber, Paulina Fröhlich, an expert on democracy and cohesion at the Bertelsmann Foundation, will discuss with Manuela Ritz, social education worker, coach and author and activist Max Schneller.
Dagmar Hovestädt will moderate the discussion.
The event takes place as part of “Berlin Freedom Week” and concludes the four-part series “On Borders: Draw, Tear Down and Move” in BERLIN GLOBAL.
