24 Hour Party People

'24 Hour Party People' is a stunningly entertaining — at times moving — tribute to Manchester's 1976-92 independent music scene. The film takes a close look at the record label Factory Records and the bands that became part of the Factory family — Joy Division, New Order, The Durutti Column, Happy Mondays and others — and tells, among other things, how brothers Shaun and Paul Ryder (Happy Mondays) exterminated all pigeons in their childhood neighborhood with rat poison, and how Joy Division signed their contract in blood (literally!). But in particular, the corporation's eccentric leader, the TV host Tony Wilson (inimitable Steve Coogan), is at its centre. Wilson's sustained inquiries to the camera alternate with Steve Coogan's analyses of the film he's starring in Welcome to the mockumentary of the postmodern era!
