6th Bartoszewski Promemoria Symposium “Polish-German Neighbourhood — Trials and Challenges in Times of Global Crises”

How can Poland and Germany jointly respond to contemporary global challenges? What role do civil society, democracy and memory culture play in shaping the future of Polish-German relations?

The 6th Bartoszewski Promemoria Symposium will be devoted to these issues, which on November 5, 2026 will bring together representatives of science, diplomacy and other expert circles from Poland and Germany. The focus will be on contemporary challenges facing the Polish-German neighbourhood in the face of international crises and geopolitical changes.

The inaugural lecture will be given by the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Jan Tombiński, who — on the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Good Neighbourhood and Friendly Cooperation between Poland and Germany — will present its significance for the present and future of Polish-German relations. Then, during three thematic panels, the role of civil society, the resilience of the democratic rule of law and the potential of Polish-German cooperation in the field of memory culture will be discussed.

At the end of the symposium, students will have the opportunity to deepen the topics discussed during Polish-German workshops with the participation of experts. The event will also be accompanied by an exhibition dedicated to Władysław Bartoszewski and his contribution to the development of Polish-German relations.

6th Bartoszewski Promemoria Symposium “Deutschpolnische Nachbarschaft — Knowledge Tests in Times of the Rising World”

Wie können Deutschland und Polen den aktuellen globalen Herausforderungen gemeinsam begegnen? Welche rolle spielen Civilgesellschaft, Demokratie und Erinnerungskultur für die Zukunft der deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen?

Diesen Fragen widmet sich das 6. Bartoszewski Promemoria, das am 5. November 2026 Wissenschaftlerinnen, Diplomatinnen und Diplomaten sowie weitere Expertinnen aus Deutschland und Polen zusammenbringt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die aktuellen Bewährungsproben der deutsch-polnischen Nachbarschaft vor dem Hintergrund internationaler Krisen und geopolitischer Veränderungen.

Den Eröffnungsvortrag hält der polnische Botschafter Jan Tombiński, der 35 Jahre nach der Unterzeichnung des deutsch-polnischen Nachbarschaftsvertrags dessen Bedeutung für die Gegenwart und Zukunft der bilateralen Beziehungen beleuchtet. In three thematic Panels werden anschließend die Rolle der Zivilgesellschaft, die Resilienz des demokratschen Rechtsstaats sowie das Potenzial der deutsch-polnischen Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Erinnerungskultur diskutiert.

Im Anschluss an das Symposium haben Studierende die Möglichkeit, die Themen der Veranstaltung in einem Deutsch-Polnischen Workshop gemeinsam mit expert*innen zu vertiefen. Begleitend wird eine Ausstellung über Władysław Bartoszewski und seinen Beitrag zur Entwicklung der deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen präsentiert.
