The 71st Flaherty Film Seminar — Warsaw Edition

Join us at the 71st Flaherty Film Seminar | Warsaw Edition, which will take place from 8 to 11 October at U—Jazdowski Kino. The event is organized in cooperation with the AMATOR Film and Education Association.

This year's program, Gestures of Refusal, focuses on images that resist decay — works that bring out what empires and erasure processes have buried in structures, systems, and visual media themselves. Through fragmentation, recall of memories, and interventions in archives, this year's program explores how memory is constructed, displaced, and retrieved.

The Flaherty Film Seminar is an internationally acclaimed educational and discussion program with a long and rich history. It was started in 1954 by Frances, the widow of the famous American documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty, director of Nanuka from the North. It has been held every year since the 1950s. Creators, critics, academics and film enthusiasts come together for a few days to watch films and participate in discussions. The principle of “no preconception” applies — participants do not know what they are going to watch, and the entire program and invited guests remain a secret. The program of the 71st Flaherty Film Seminar Gestures of Refusal will be presented in parallel in only a few locations around the world as part of the Flaherty Pods initiative. It brings the experience of this prestigious event to local communities (in the US, Argentina, Thailand and Poland), creating an inclusive space for discussion around carefully selected films.

Participants come into contact with cinema in their local context, connecting at the same time with a global dialogue taking place at the same time. Warsaw Pod offers professionally prepared screenings with Polish subtitles and inspiring talks conducted by local curators, artists and scientists. Registration includes access to seven unique cinematic blocks presented over the course of four days.
