Taken away from her mother and the lush countryside to the city and an unknown family, six-year-old Wu Lian has to adapt quickly. Unfolding over a decade, with a camera always at her young protagonist’s eyeline, A Girl Unknown is a richly textured coming-of-age drama, pulsating with raw energy as it questions notions of identity, belonging and the trauma of abandonment.
A Girl Unknown (Wu ming nü hai), dir. Zou Jing, China/France 2026, Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles, 128 min.
