Colombian festival darling in Himmelbio

About the event

In collaboration with the Generation film festival, possibly the funniest films of the year from Latin America are presented. A debauched, drinkly poet with bad hair, slutty attitude and droopy lower lip meets a young underclass girl with talent. She must become his proud protégé and rescue in terms of self-esteem.

The scene is a Colombian metropolis, and at its centre stands the uncharming and self-absorbed Óscar, age-wise on the wrong side of half a century. Financially under severe pressure. He talks more than he writes.

He forcefully takes a job as a high school teacher, but is lousy at motivating and instead favors the one girl who shows an interest in poetry. But the timing is favorable: The school lacks a young talent for an upcoming literature festival. That setup ends up both absurd and fateful for both parties.

Ubeimar Rios is fabulous as the has-been who was once a poetic hope for a generation but now barely has his own mother's respect. He drinks his way through everyday life, waking on sidewalks and muttering to old role models staring disapprovingly from the walls. He also has a daughter from a previous marriage, but he's really bad at anything that isn't about himself. 'A Poet' is a shit-hammering beard but also agonizing drama about art, class and responsibility. Expect both embarrassing humor and small moments of sincere redemption.

'A Poet' is shown as a collaboration between the Generation film festival and the Latin American Film Festival. Note that there is both an indoor and a Sky Cinema screening of the film.
