A Whole Night

A hot summer evening in Brussels: Couples dance in bars and cafes and move freely in the moonlight. Romance and love arise, reawaken and dissolve in the warm breeze and in the special state of the night. In Chantal Akerman's 'A Whole Night' a host of characters appear in small vignettes, constantly hinting at the larger narratives unfolding just outside the film's frame. The result is an elliptical and atmospheric melodrama, told with the formalistic sharpness that has made Akerman one of the most distinctive directors in film history.

The film represents a time when filmmakers like her had some freedom to create their films as they wished. For me, this film has everything one could wish for.”
