The ADIRA Drag Festival celebrates Eastern Mediterranean culture through drag, music and performance. Under the motto “Who's Your Diva?!” The third edition is also taking place at HAU Hebbel am Ufer for the first time. This year's festival dares to do the almost impossible: a drag ensemble that is dedicated together to a personality who has never shared a stage in her life. By definition, a diva is a solo artist. What happens when divas have to compete for the limelight? What alliances or rivalries arise when icons who are used to standing alone are thrown into an ensemble? Revered as criticized in equal measure, divas can be imperfect, controversial, scandalous, politically complicated, and sometimes even profoundly questionable. But it is often precisely these contradictions that make them objects of identification and fantasy for queer communities. Each artist reinterprets a diva that has shaped her career — from faithful homages to radical new interpretations — and lets her perform on a stage that was previously exclusively dedicated to her.
