“Aida” is a four-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi composed to the libretto by Antoni Ghislanzoni. It was specially commissioned by Ismail Pasha, a kedywa of Egypt, on the occasion of the opening of the Opera House in Cairo. The enthusiastic reception of the opera by the audience of that time and subsequent premieres on the world opera stages made the story of the Ethiopian princess find its permanent place in the canon of opera literature. The work became one of the pillars of the opera repertoire, combining the power of Verdi's music with a universal message of love, loyalty and destiny.

About the event

The action of the opera takes place in ancient Egypt, during the wars between Egypt and Ethiopia. The main character of the opera is the eponymous Aida, an Ethiopian princess who is kidnapped and made a slave at the court of the pharaoh. Aida hides her royal origins by living in the shadows as a servant. Despite her dramatic situation, she falls in love with a young Egyptian military commander, Radames. Their love, though beautiful and reciprocated, is marked by the stigma of unfulfillment. Radames, appointed chief of the army, becomes a symbol of hostile power for Aida and her father Amonasro, the Ethiopian king. The lovers' situation is further complicated by the jealousy of Amneris, Pharaoh's daughter, who has affection for Radames and uses her position to manipulate others and influence the course of events. The dilemmas of the protagonists - the rift between love, loyalty to the homeland and duty to the family lead to an inevitable, tragic finale.

The monumentalism of the work, the combination of original strength with timeless elegance and simplicity will allow to show the universal message of the opera and to echo in it the echoes of contemporary dilemmas. It is an opera about the choices that shape human life, about the price of freedom and the power of love that is capable of transcending the boundaries of time and space.
