Screening of the film “MADE A SOLDIER OF POLAND” together with a meeting with the director.
It is a documentary about the fate of Franciszek Ożga, a constructor, cinematographer and filmmaker who, during World War II, organized funds in the United States for the realization of a unique series of films documenting the efforts of the Polish soldier on the Western Front. Together with other artists, including Karaszkiewicz, Jaszcz and Janczytis, Ożga created an extraordinary record of the path of Polish armed formations fighting alongside the Allies.
The film uses fragments of archives, such as: Poland has not died yet (about the formation of the Polish Army in France), Soldier's Day (filmed in a military camp in Scotland), reports on General Władysław Sikorski's visit to the United States or his funeral, as well as We Go — the most important film showing the battle route of the 1st General Armoured Division Mace.
The Polish Soldier is not only a story about the heroic deeds of Polish soldiers, but also a tribute to the filmmakers who documented the war at the risk of their lives. Their work, carried out selflessly and often in extremely difficult conditions, allowed to preserve the image of those events in the memory of subsequent generations. The film reminds us that the war archives, which we take for granted today, are the fruit of enormous effort and determination of people whose merits are too often forgotten.
