A story filled with the nostalgic aura of the end of summer and, more broadly, of the small end of the world that disappears in the face of a galloping civilization. In the Golden Bear awarded Alcarràs, we follow the splendors and shadows of the daily life of a multi-generational family from the eponymous village, who faces the loss of their farm.
Alcarràs is full of intense flavors and scents that bring to mind Luca Guadagnino's Those Days, Those Nights, and has in it the autobiographical sincerity, warmth and unobtrusive sense of humor known from the Summer of 1993 (Carla Simón's memorable debut). In both films, the placement of children's protagonists in the center also allowed to give an unusual value to seemingly trivial and everyday events. The intimate Alcarràs, however, goes beyond the intimate portrait of the family and also directs our gaze to the pressing problems of today. The tranquility of the provincial world is irretrievably disturbed here by the aggressive encroachment of technological progress. Faced with these events, the heroes must make a choice that will weigh on their further fate. Which will prevail: pragmatism or idealism?
