Academy of World Cinema: Bratan

The story of 17-year-old Farruch and seven-year-old Azamat, two brothers living in a small Tajik town, raised by their grandmother since their parents separated. One day, the guys decide to go to their father, who lives in a distant city and works there as a doctor in a sanatorium. They board an extraordinary train that takes them across Tajikistan — through hills and mountains, cities and villages — all the way to the border with Afghanistan. After an adventurous journey, they finally meet their father.

Bratan is Chudonazarov's full-length debut, filmed when the director was only 25 years old. The film is distinguished by what usually characterizes excellent cinema: a sense of space, skillfully built characters, fluid narration and excellent black and white photographs. Bratan has been shown at many prestigious festivals and won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the IFF in Mannheim in 1991.
