Roman Tokarski, a composer collecting occupation melodies, tells a young Polish soldier, a repatriate from England, the story of a “forbidden song” in the capital. The Warsaw woman evokes images from the autumn of 1939: the first patriotic street concerts, in which the musician and his sister Halinka also participated. Together they organized a street orchestra, later they worked in the conspiracy, carrying weapons, tissue paper, taking part in sabotage actions. After the Warsaw Uprising, they took refuge in partisan detachments. The history of their wartime fates intersects with those of the other inhabitants of the tenement house: a carpenter, a cowardly neighbor of the Tokarskis, a Jew in hiding, a false violinist, a traitor, a German confidante.

The first Polish feature film made after the war warmly recorded the customary life in the occupied capital and the specific form of resistance, which was the public performance of forbidden patriotic songs and songs ridiculing the occupier. The second version was assembled following allegations published by “Kuźnica”: after the scenes of the uprising, a sequence of the parade of troops occupying Warsaw and several scenes “reinforcing the realism” of the occupation were added. Today, the main character of the film remained the authentic street song and the voices of its anonymous performers.

At first it was positively received by critics, however, it soon generated controversy, as a result of which it was not allowed to be distributed.
