||ALA|MEDA|| (also known as ALAMEDA 5) is one of the most innovative and original bands that have appeared on the Polish alternative scene in recent years. For nearly a decade he has been creating music that eludes classifications and combines various genres, which has led to his own unique style based on constant metamorphosis.
Whether it was the raucous and jazz-inspired neo-krautrock from “Spirit of the Tornado” (Instant Classic, 2015) or the polyrhythmic avant-prog from “Eurodrome” (Instant Classic, 2019), the effects of the group's creative search always yielded music that was inventive, surprising and beyond the clichés of musical canons.
The group's new venture, “Spectra” (Brutality Garden, 2022/2024), is an original reinterpretation of traditional and modern rhythms characteristic of Africa and South America, which also appeared to a lesser extent on previous albums. The new face of the group consists of a strongly syncopated rhythm performed by two drummer-percussionists (Jacek Buhl, Rafał Iwański) and a bassist (Piotr Michalski), who create the scaffolding for wild post-internet and deconstructed electronic collages by Łukasz Jędrzejczak and Jakub Ziołek. This new artistic direction is “spectral” in many senses: it creates a continuum of various musical tropes, combining such different genres as gqom, free jazz, UK bass, krautrock, IDM, post-industrial, batida into one differentiating whole.
The result is a unique tropical-industrial mix, where avant-garde meets afro-house, and extensive sampling and granular synthesis techniques are coupled with the frenetic play of a lively rhythm section. The idea that guides the new work of the band is the total integration of electronics with live playing and blurring all divisions between high and low art, sublime and vulgar, avant-garde and entertainment, music “for the soul” and music “for the body”. However, this is not a postmodern feast for weary spirits, nor an expression of nostalgic longing for long-lost unity with Nature, but a new realism in an ever-changing world.
||ALA|MEDA|| is known for his extremely intense and euphoric concerts, which have given him performances at festivals such as: OFF Festival, Bedem Fest in Montenegro, Square — Mapping the Atlantic in Portugal, Colours of Ostrava, Positive Futures in Innsbruck, Wine Nat White Heat in Nantes and Paris, Jaiyede Jazz in Odense, Sharpe in Bratislava Avant Art in Warsaw and Wrocław, Ethnies in Bydgoszcz, Katowice JazzArt Festival, Unsound in Krakow and many others. The group consists of five experienced artists representing different generations of musical innovators: Jacek Buhl (Jachna/Mazurkiewicz/Buhl, Tritony), Rafał Iwański (Voices of the Cosmos, HATI, Innercity Ensemble), Łukasz Jędrzejczak (T'ien Lai, Javva), Piotr Michalski (3moonboys) and Jakub Ziołek (T'ien Lai, Stara) River, Amber, Innercity Ensemble). The sound engineer of the band is Szymon Szwarc (RZWD, SKI).
