“Buy now. Polish women in the land of consumerism.” Author's meeting with Paulina Zagórska
hosted by: Kalina Olejniczak
Duration: 90 min/age 18+
What is behind our shopping choices? Do Polish women really love promotions? Why is Poland the textile dump of Europe?
Paulina Zagórska takes a closer look at the contemporary land of consumerism and looks from a feminist and linguistic perspective at how the market enters new areas of women's life.
It shows how the language of self-care, free choice, self-development and responsibility helps sell us not only things, but also specific ideas about how we should look, live, care for ourselves and others.
“Women in Poland live under incredible pressure to constantly improve themselves. They should always look good, feel good, eat well, take care of the body, health, home and loved ones. They are meant to be conscious, fulfilled and enterprising. And buy a lot of things that are supposed to help them with this. Paulina Zagórska shows a world in which the feeling of female inadequacy has become a business model. A world that first convinces millions of women that they're missing something and then sells them more ways to fix it. All under the guise of “friendly advice” and self-care. This book reveals a mechanism that, after years of training, we consider natural. It shows who makes money on it. And what a high price women pay for it. Without moralizing, but with the hope that together we can change it” (Jan Śpiewak).
“Paulina Zagórska explains the world to us. And he does it perfectly. It uncompromisingly describes our entanglement in the obsession with consumption, while at the same time giving us the tools to recognize its source. Decomposes the first tricks of marketing into factors. It makes a flawless and in places devastating social diagnosis. It's a book that you just have to read — so as not to go crazy” (Sonia Kisha) {publisher's description}
