Alessandro de' Medici: The Black Prince of Florence

Alessandro de' Medici was the first of his family to rule Florence as duke and the immediate predecessor to Cosimo I. He was challenged by rebels who thought Florence should stay a republic, and by a cousin who thought the low-born Alessandro - rumoured to be the son of a slave - ought not to be duke. Catherine Fletcher unpicks the complex tale of Alessandro's background and his turbulent years in power.

Our free display, Cosimo I de’ Medici: Art and Dynasty draws on the museum's collection to show how Cosimo used art to strengthen his authority, impress his court, and secure his family's legacy.
