“You will always be a foreigner, no matter how good your German is.” Alex Stanić is 12 years old when she hears this sentence, pronounced by a regular guest of her Bosnian parents, who run a tavern. A sentence that casts its shadow: Right thinking and values have migrated from the dining rooms and living rooms to the 8 o'clock news, feature books and government programs. Alien brat, social parasite, cultural polluter, Švabica, man-hater, combat lesbian — In her first non-fiction book, each of these attributions becomes a narrative starting point for Stanić to shed light on class issues, misogyny and right-wing populism. In a touching way, she shows the challenges faced by multiple marginalized people and which bridges need to be built to overcome them.

Stanić is soft but fights out of strategy, because: without conflict, no change. She writes radically close to herself, without taking on the role of victim, but with an unwavering eye for structural violence.

Alexandra Stanić is a journalist and expert in feminist and digital discourses. On social media, in lectures and on panels, she talks about social justice, sexuality and hate online. Alexandra Stanić was chief reporter at the Viennese city magazine BIBER and at VICE Austria. She lives in Vienna.
