Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet [21:30]

His innovative compositions draw inspiration from different genres and life experiences, creating works that are both poetic and bold. His unique approach has earned him critical acclaim and support from institutions such as the Doris Duke Foundation and Kennedy Center. Akinmusire strives to break down barriers in music by creating emotional narratives that capture community stories and challenge norms while paying homage to Black innovation and tradition.

Born in Oakland, California, Akinmusire was spotted early on by saxophonist Steve Coleman, which resulted in a European tour when the trumpeter was just 19 years old. He honed his skills at the Manhattan School of Music and the University of Southern California, studying with such jazz masters as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. In 2007, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, which marked the beginning of his impressive phonographic career.

Akinmusire's album, Honey From a Winter Stone, released on January 17, 2025, is the result of collaborations with vocalist-improviser Kokaya, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic playing synthesizers, drummer Justin Brown, and string quartet Mivos. The album has been recognized for its deep exploration of the African American experience, combining modern string sounds, freestyle and contemporary jazz into dynamic, detail-rich soundscapes.
