The production designer of the MGM studios, Cedric Gibbons, created a Paris as Parisian as can only be created in Hollywood for the musical AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. Shot entirely in the studio except for a few totals, the story of an American ex-GI (Gene Kelly) who settles down as a painter in Paris after the Second World War and falls in love with a young French woman (Leslie Caron) thrives on the choreography of Gene Kelly, the music of George Gershwin and the production and color dramaturgy of Vincente Minnelli. The highlight of the film is a 16-minute dance scene in which the two dance through a series of recreated images.
