Anatevka is part of the DNA of the Komische Oper Berlin like hardly any other musical: Walter Felsenstein's GDR premiere was already on the schedule a whopping 500 times. When Barrie Kosky resumed the work in 2017, there was great cheer. The New York Times, for example, wrote about Kosky's production: “This is certainly the most convincing — and least cliché — Anatevka performance imaginable. ”
In Shtetl Anatevka, all life strictly follows Jewish tradition. But the milkman Tevje wrestles with her. And with his god. And with the love of his three eldest daughters — until pogroms threaten the lives of the small village community...
Between humor and human suffering, Anatevka creates one of the most life-affirming love-entangled marriage comedy of the 20th century.
