About the event

We cordially invite you to a meeting with Andrzej Poczobut, a representative of the Polish minority in Belarus, a journalist, defender of freedom of speech, the right to independent memory and historical truth, imprisoned for almost five years by the Lukashenko regime. It will take place on 13 October this year at 18:00 in the A1 hall of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Warsaw (Pomorska 171/173 Street). Admission is free.

The meeting will be devoted to the mechanisms used by modern authoritarian regimes, subordinating not only the media, public debate and historical memory, but also the very concept of truth and the system of law. It will illuminate the relationship between post-truth, propaganda and law in authoritarian systems, with a special focus on contemporary Belarus. Post-truth will be presented not only as a media or communication phenomenon, but as a way of exercising power.

Our guest of honor will give an approximately 30-minute lecture “History as a Threat. Post-truth and law at the service of authoritarian regimes.” After the lecture, a question and answer session and a conversation with the participants of the meeting were scheduled.

Andrzej Poczobut will talk about, among other things, how in an authoritarian state facts can be replaced by a politically useful narrative, and the law — instead of protecting the citizen — can become an instrument of repression against those who question this narrative. The reference point will be both his many years of journalistic and personal experience — trial, prison and political repression.

We cordially invite you.
