About the event
Venue: DT Bühne - Information about the person. That sounds like the best government German. And indeed: The German tax authorities are haunting Elfriede Jelinek's new piece. The tax investigation is getting around, private premises are being searched, papers are confiscated. On these papers: everything that accumulates over a long life. Stories of the living, stories of the dead, actually more about the dead now. Because from the lyrics, a voice that feels like the last speaks: “After me, it's irrevocably over with the Jelineks! Everyone gone, everyone gone except me.” So the author takes “the last few meters” as an opportunity to look at her own “career path,” at the “misdeeds” of her own past, at the “undead” of her biography. She talks about her parents and grandparents, about the Jewish part of her family, about relatives who were expelled and murdered, about flight and persecution, about compensation for perpetrators, about old and new Nazis, past and present. She writes as an accused plaintiff, as a victim and as a lawyer. About yourself. About Germany. Sometimes in overflowing cascades of anger and word. Sometimes as a reminder of the forgotten and as a mourning song of rare clarity. Jossi Wieler, who has worked closely with Elfriede Jelinek for thirty years, will premiere one of her most personal theatre texts to date, with the name of the person.
