Silent Green presents
Angel Bat Dawid is a composer, conductor, clarinetist, pianist, DJ and sound engineer living in Chicago with over 35 years of stage experience. As a United States Artist Fellow (2025) and Artist in Residence at Northwestern University's Black Arts Consortium, she is considered one of the defining voices of contemporary Afrofuturism — her practice combines classical composition, gospel, jazz and avant-garde improvisation with speculative aesthetics and archival research.
Since her debut album The Oracle (2019, International Anthem Recording Co.), which she produced, recorded and mixed entirely herself, Dawid has established herself as an independent compositional voice. Her 14-part work The Souls of Black Folk Suite premiered at Harris Theater Chicago in 2026; she had previously premiered the commissioned composition Blk Metropolis Apocalypse with the string ensemble D-Composed at the opening of Theaster Gates' Land School.
Dawid leads The Brothahood (album LIVE, acclaimed by NPR) and the group Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty and is a clarinettist in Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble. Her collaborations range from André 3000, Moor Mother and Saul Williams to Shabaka Hutchings and Lonnie Holley; for over five years, she has also curated a monthly program on NTS Radio documenting black music history. She contributed the music for the second season of Terence Nancy's HBO series Random Acts of Flyness.
Dawid has performed internationally at the Barbican Centre, the BBC Proms, the EFG London Jazz Festival, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Jazzfest Berlin, among others. In June 2026, she presents the premiere of Henry 'Box' Brown: Tales of a Magical Nee Grow on the Western Front in Vancouver.
