About the event

“Angel's Egg” as part of the After Subtitled Film Club, directed by Mamoru Oshii (Japan 1985)

For the first time on the cinema screen in 40 years. The restored 4K version of the legendary production directed by master Mamoru Oshii will be released in cinemas across Poland.

The original world affected by a cataclysm. A reality in which aimlessly wandering people are guided by a mechanical sun. It is here that two nameless characters meet: a fair-haired girl with sad eyes and a young man who sows anxiety in her. A girl takes care of a mysterious egg, believing that an angel will hatch from it. The boy persuades her to break the shell, because only in this way can she know the secret of its interior. Together, they traverse a depressing world made of bronze, ruins, mechanical entrails, and artifacts of bygone eras — all the way to an allegorical finale.

The film by Mamoru Oshii, director of the cult animations “Ghost in the Shell” and the already famous Polish-Japanese “Avalon” with Małgorzata Foremniak, is a philosophical and ambitious experiment full of intelligent symbolism, using biblical motifs and dreamlike aesthetics. Oshii, in interviews over the course of four decades, has repeatedly explained the significance of individual scenes and endings, as well as his fascination with hope as what can be hidden in a mystical egg.

“Angel's Egg” was created by Oshii together with visual artist Yoshitaka Amano, one of the leading creators of Japanese animation. The film premiered in 1985, and critics immediately recognized it as a tasteful, ambitious work of art, although it took as much as four decades for “Angel's Egg” to receive the recognition it deserved worldwide. This is reflected in the premiere of the digitally renewed version, which took place in 2025 at the Cannes Film Festival.
