Paweł Althamer's films from the MSN collection lead to the beginnings of his artistic path — even before he entered the professional circulation and his works gained international notoriety. The actions and actions recorded on the tapes show a period that is now partly forgotten, and at the same time crucial for shaping his later practice.
Among the materials there are documentations of activities related to Kowalnia, but also experiments with the medium itself and the search for the idea of a “camera-free film”.
Some of the footage may resemble innocent documentation, although many of the recorded situations were precisely directed. Together they create a special picture of the reality of the breakthrough — a kind of diary of transformation, on which a formal experiment and an interest in the possibilities of film are superimposed. It is this duality that distinguishes them from the typical records of the era.
After the show, there will be a talk in which Paweł Althamer and his son Bruno Neuhamer will take part. The meeting will be led by Aniela Trojanowska from the Collections Department of MSN.
