Audio-described talk and music performance for blind and partially sighted audiences based on Francisco de Goya's The Duke of Wellington. Monday 16th November. 2-3pm, Gallery Room 38.

About the event

Join us for an audio-described exploration of Francisco de Goya’s portrait The Duke of Wellington, accompanied by a live performance of a bespoke musical response composed by Nina Plapp.

Marking the start of UK Disability History Month, November’s Audio Art: Utterly in the Picture invites us to consider the different ways we experience, interpret and connect with art. Led by Gallery Educator Katy Tarbard, the session will explore Goya’s compelling portrait of the Duke of Wellington, one of the most celebrated military figures of his age.

Through detailed audio description and Nina Plapp’s specially composed musical response, participants will be invited to encounter the painting through sound and close listening as well as sight. Together, we’ll explore Goya’s portrayal of Wellington, from his expression and appearance to the details of his dress and decoration, considering what the portrait might reveal about the person behind the public image.

Created especially for blind and partially sighted visitors, Audio Art celebrates different ways of experiencing art and welcomes everyone interested in discovering paintings through a deeper, multi-sensory encounter.

These sessions take place seated in front of the painting. Please meet in the advertised room, or at the Getty Entrance 15 minutes before the start time if you would like to be guided to the space. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome.
