Avenue Q

Welcome to New York's fictional Avenue Q, far from the famous Fifth Avenue like in the alphabet, the letter Q from A. Such a street can be found in every city in the world. It may well be called Kolejowa, Parkowa or Klonowa. Here live: a novice preschooler, an unfulfilled comedian, a psychotherapist, to whom patients do not report, and a treacherous seductress, from whom it is better to keep their husbands away. Familiar neighborhood? Their problems, too, are universal and timeless.

Musical Avenue Q is a skits full obscene comedy about longing for love, loneliness, rejection, passion and, above all, the painful confrontation of life plans with reality. What is left in such moments if not laughter? Although the protagonists are dolls, it is definitely a spectacle for adults, and some fragments of dialogues or songs should even be silenced. It is a story that is obscene and full of biting remarks, and at the same time extremely funny, which accurately ridicules the dilemmas of eternal dreamers.

With an innovative combination of puppetry and music, this original performance has won the recognition of audiences around the world, offering entertainment, reflection and unique theatrical experiences all in one. In the center of events are the distinctive characters known from Sesame Street or The Muppet Show. The mechanisms used in the dolls allow the actors to precisely animate them with their hands, facial expressions and gestures, which in combination with professional acting adds realism to the whole and allows you to capture references to real-life scenes.

The music, consisting of catchy, humorous songs, perfectly complements the action and harmonizes with the plot. The lyrics of the songs touch on the topics of growing up, interpersonal relationships and everyday problems, and their cheerful, sometimes controversial content saturates the show with freshness and gives it a rude character.

The fictional place where the action takes place is a metaphor for the modern life situations and personal struggles of the characters. The reason for all the failures is the Patsy Bears, who suggest the worst solutions, whisper in our ear to survive the rent or have another drink. We also solve other people's problems with great commitment, without dealing with our own.

The Poznań production is directed by Łukasz Brzeziński. The musical direction is carried out by Dariusz Tarczewski, and the vocal by Paweł Orłowski. Choreographed by Barbara Olech. The costumes are created by Katarzyna Zawal, and the set design is created by Grupa Mixer. The sound is directed by Tomasz Zajma, while the lights are directed by Katarzyna Łuszczyk. The author of all the projects and the finished dolls is Igor Fijalkovsky.

In 2004, Avenue Q received the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Soundtrack and Best Libretto. It ranks 22nd on the list of the longest-running Broadway musicals. In the Musical Theater in Poznań from February 8, 2025!
