In modern-day Japan, Yūta Shimotsu society is gripped by a wave of anxiety, political moods become radicalized, and successive groups of people succumb to a collective fever. Also in a certain school, the situation gets out of control: students form strange gymnastic layouts, obeying a frightening collective rhythm. Only a handful retain common sense — among them is an Ai who cannot be absorbed by the prevailing madness. “The New Group” is a horror movie that really gets under your skin — intense, hysterical, and disturbingly funny. The director blasts school everyday life with absurdity, carnal and violence, creating a ruthless satire on Japanese groupism and a society in which the individual disappears more and more easily in the crowd.
