The Bamboo House

With the color film and the CinemaScope format, Samuel Fuller expanded his film language. 'House of Bamboo' was recorded in Tokyo and follows Sergeant Kenner (Robert Stack) who goes undercover in an attempt to infiltrate an American gangster gang. The gang is led by the inscrutable Sandy Dawson (Robert Ryan). Fuller lets Tokyo's streets and city life play a central role. In the wide CinemaScope images, the city becomes the scene of a conflict in which both gangsters and police behave brutally and ruthlessly, and in which it is not so easy to determine who really has morals on their side. “The police are far more violent and unpleasant than the criminals,” Fuller himself said.
