There was something uneasy in the air right at the beginning of the noughties. Between digital departure and personal overload, a generation was looking for words for feelings that could barely be described. Band of Horses found these words and translated them into music that reached far and yet aimed at the interior. Ben Bridwell's songs told of change, loss and trying to bring order to one's own life. His high-pitched, stubborn voice floated over scrambling guitars like a distant light that doesn't point the way, but gives hope.
The debut “Everything All The Time” was released in 2006 on Sub Pop — the legendary Seattle label that reinvented itself after grunge and once again became the first address for independent music. Looking back, it's hardly surprising that Jonathan Poneman took immediate action here. Even “The Funeral” developed a peculiar magic: a song about loss and acceptance that managed to be intimate and universal at the same time. As an underground hit, catchy commercial song and movie song, it became an emotional reference point and is still celebrated today as a silent manifesto about how to live with the inevitable.
