Street of childhood

Anne Linnet provided the title tune, and Sofie Gråbøl struck through the role of Tove Ditlevsen's alter ego in this Danish classic based on Ditlevsen's 1943 novel of the same name. The film follows young girl Ester who grows up in a working-class family in 1930s Hedebygade on Vesterbro - back then in a narrow farm filled with drunks, lice and lirecracker men. Ester feels trapped between childhood and adulthood, between the security of her upbringing and the dream of something bigger. She struggles with loneliness, budding love and a longing to break free from the world she knows. Through the poetic and realistic depiction of Ester's life, we get an insight into both the vulnerability of her youth and the harsh conditions of the working class. “A beautiful and credible film adaptation of Tove Ditlevsen's classic that captures the melancholy tone of the book and depicts a girl's path towards adulthood with both sensitivity and raw realism,” Politiken wrote.
