In a dystopian near-future Japan where juvenile delinquency is out of control, 42 senior school pupils each year are forced into the government’s ‘Battle Royale’ programme. Taken to a remote island and fitted with an explosive collar around their necks, each pupil is given a weapon, food, water, map and compass. Their only order: kill or be killed.
Blood-drenched, savage, and darkly funny, the film was a sensation at home and abroad upon first release, and introduced Fujiwara to the world as Shuya Nanahara, the resilient schoolboy who refuses to play the deadly teen death game and fights to survive.
