Drama, transcendence and Beethoven at his most electrifying shape this extraordinary programme.
Thomas Hengelbrock opens with Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture, music of theatrical flair, restless energy and irrepressible invention. Daniel Hope brings his characteristic insight and lyricism to Sofia Gubaidulina’s Offertorium, a violin concerto of profound spiritual intensity whose continual transformations unfold with luminous beauty and quiet mystery.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 crowns the evening with one of music’s most gripping dramatic journeys. From its iconic opening motif to the blazing affirmation of the finale, every note drives towards a hard-won sense of triumph. Heard alongside Gubaidulina’s visionary masterpiece, the symphony becomes part of a larger meditation on struggle, transformation and redemption, revealing new resonances in one of the repertoire’s most familiar works.
Gubaidalina’s Offertorium is supported by the Royal Philharmonic Society, with a grant from the RPS Ambach Fund.
Beethoven 200 is made possible by Cockayne Grants for the Arts, founding supporters of the Philharmonia Creative Futures Fund. Cockayne Grants for the Arts is a Donor Advised Donor Fund, held at The Prism Charitable Trust.
