The work of Walter Ruttmann gave the title to the film genre, which cinema historians have called the urban symphony. Films of this trend, created independently of each other in different parts of Europe and North America at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, combined the features of documentary and experimental film. They were an expression of fascination with the development of industrial-era cities and the new, metropolitan lifestyle taking shape before the eyes of filmmakers.
Berlîn. The Symphony of the Great City is a story about one day in the life of the German capital, divided into five acts corresponding to the following times of the day. The rhythm of the film - like the rhythm of urban activity - gets faster and faster as time goes on. Ruttmann's avant-garde documentary is a portrait of the machine-city.
