Two sides of romance: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's colorful, shimmering stage music for Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream captivates with elf-like lightness — and radiant euphoria in the famous wedding march. Robert Schumann, on the other hand, strikes a thoughtful, sensitive tone in his cello concerto. The soloist is Yo-Yo Ma: probably the most renowned cellist of our time, who returns to the Berliner Philharmoniker after a long break. Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk opens the evening with the nostalgic work Recollections: Locket, in which our composer in Residence Brett Dean quotes a theme by Clara Schumanns.
