With his Second Piano Concerto, Sergei Prokofiev created a work full of archaic power, glowing energy and mystical moments — and at the same time one of the most challenging compositions of the genre. An ideal terrain for pianist Seong-Jin Cho, who combines virtuosity and subtlety in his playing. Witold Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, which features echoes of Masurian folk music, is just as powerful and pushing forward. Conducting: the young Chinese woman Elim Chan, who makes her debut in these concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker. At the opening, she presents the humorous fairy tale poem by Sofia Gubaidulina.
