info
Dramatic, passionate, plaintive — works in the key of C minor have a unique character. Franz Schubert wrote his painful C minor string quartet movement as a 17-year-old. Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, spent almost 20 years working on his darkly rebellious Opus 51 No. 1. Above both stands the great role model Ludwig van Beethoven: Although his quartet op. 59 No. 1 leads into the brighter sound world of F major, develops a musical density and expressive power that points far into Romanticism. In the enthralling finale, Beethoven takes up a popular Russian theme — an homage to Prince Rasumowsky, who commissioned the work.
