info

The Missa solemnis is one of Beethoven's most personal works — a passionate commitment to faith and at the same time to humanity. The work combines the traditions of church music and yet goes far beyond that in its monumental form. Beethoven interprets the sacred text hymnically, dramatically, then again quietly and contemplatively — from the first solemn Kyrie calls to the last, urgent plea for peace, which impending sounds of war endanger time and again. On the 200th anniversary of the composer's death, Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker perform Beethoven's Missa solemnis as part of our Biennale of Signs and Wonders.
