Martha Argerich's appearances with the Berliner Philharmoniker are always an event. This time we see them in Sergei Prokofiev's lively, high-energy Third Piano Concerto. At the opening, Claude Debussy's prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune takes you into a sensual dream world with shimmering, impressionistic sounds. Chicks in eggshells, the hut of the witch Baba-Yaga or the magnificent gate of Kiev — Modest Mussorgsky impressively set these and other pictorial motifs to music in his series Pictures of an Exhibition. Orchestrated by Maurice Ravel, the cycle became one of the most popular orchestral works. It is conducted by Lahav Shani.
