Irmgard Keun, Oskar Maria Graf, Max Brod, Ödön von Horvath, Lion Feuchtwanger, Annette Kolb, the Mann Brothers or Ferdinand Bruckner, founder of the Renaissance Theatre and namesake of the Bruckner Foyer, for all those named — and the chain of names could be extended by many links — the exile publishers represented the artistic salvation.
Deprived not only of their country but also of their mother tongue, they helped refugee and banned authors to publish their books and thus get noticed during the National Socialist reign of terror.
The Dutch publishers Querido and Allert de Lange, perhaps the best-known publishers in exile, founded German-language departments.
But the now almost forgotten publisher Erich Reiss, for example, also created a platform for ostracized writers in Switzerland.
Magazines such as “The Word” in Moscow, Klaus Mann's “The Collection” at Querido or “The New Journal” in Paris also made a decisive contribution at times to the fact that great writers did not have to completely fall silent.
courage. conviction. drive. Just as fundamentally important back then as it is today.
