Bette Gordon's '80s cult hit 'Variety'

“I wanted to develop a story that, like pornography, triggers a longing that is never satisfied,” said director Bette Gordon in her day about the cult hit 'Variety', which features an excellent jazz score by John Lurie. Working as a ticket seller in a porn cinema in Manhattan, Christine gradually becomes fascinated by the older men who visit the cinema, as well as by the disintegration of time and place that the cinema room can evoke. 'Variety' depicts the changes taking place in Christine and in her relationship with the people around her. Few films so frankly explore a woman's sexual desires, and not least the way in which Christine gradually develops her own fantasy world.
