About the event

The Krkonoskie Museum in Jelenia Góra invites you on 29 October at 17:00 to a meeting promoting the book of Dr. Tomasz Przerwa, professor of the University of Warsaw, entitled “Bezmoc. The topic of tourist suspended cable railways and lifts in the Silesian Sudetenland until 1945”.

Bold pre-war visions of cable railways and lifts, plotted with gusto for the needs of modern tourism in the Sudetenland, reveal an unknown history of striving for modernization. Tomasz Przerwa reconstructs with extraordinary precision the times of ambitious projects that were supposed to change the face of the mountains, but remained only in documents, plans and press notes. It introduces the reader to the history of European engineering concepts, showing how local expectations and opportunities intertwined with the dynamic development of tourism in the first half of the 20th century. Prof. Tomasz Przerwa is an employee of the Historical Institute of the University of Warsaw.

The meeting will be led by Marek Szajda — Doctor of Humanities in the discipline of History (2023), a graduate of History and Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology within the MISH, as well as the Study of Jewish Culture and Languages at the University of Wrocław. He also studied in Krakow, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. He worked as a chief specialist in the Scientific Department of the Center “Memory and Future” /History Center of the Depot in Wrocław and a senior specialist-historian in the Scientific Department of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN. Currently assistant professor (post-doc) at the Institute of Sociology, Civitas University in Warsaw, in the NCN Opus project “Commemoration of the Holocaust in the “post-witness” era: anti-monuments and the collective dynamics of memory creation”.
