The Berliner Philharmoniker are launching their Biennale with the title Signs and Wonders. Kirill Petrenko also conducts three works of great spiritual and pictorial power: Olivier Messiaen's orchestral work Les Offrandes Oubliées is a floating, painful meditation on guilt, sacrifice and redemption; Paul Hindemith draws three pictures based on the famous Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald with expressive, majestically harsh sounds. In between, there will be the world premiere of Sarah Nemtsov's face — a distinctive voice of the younger generation of composers whose poetic, powerful music is directly touching.
