Irena Makarewicz — born in Warsaw, translator of Hungarian literature, oenologist and philosopher by education. She studied in Budapest and Warsaw. For many years he has been promoting the work of Sándor Márai in Poland. She has translated numerous works by this author, including short stories (Magic, Old Love), novels (Peace on Ithaca, The Forgiver, The Court of Canudos, Thirty Silver Coins, Divorce in Buda, The True One, Csutora), essays (Sunday Chronicle, School of the Poor) and travel diaries (In the Footsteps of the Gods, The Abduction of Europe and the upcoming Patrol) in the West). She is also the translator of Márai's most famous drama, Adventure, which was staged at the Polonia Theatre directed by Krystyna Janda and at the Television Theatre directed by Jan Englert. Her translation work also includes works by György Spiró (Spring Salon, Diavolina), Dezső Kosztolányi (Golden Kite), Tibor Mészáros's monograph on Márai and an interview river with György Lukács. He discovers for the Polish reader other Hungarian authors, such as Albert Wass (The Witch of Funtinel), Gábor Zoltán (Orgy — in fragments) and Miklós Bánffy, whose Transylvanian Trilogy (Counted, Volume 1; Weighted, Volume 2) is currently translating (Volume 3: Divided). She was a multiple scholarship recipient of Hungarian cultural institutions and a laureate of the Milán Füsta Foundation Prize at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He sits in the Chapter of the Marek Nowakowski Literary Prize. She was awarded the Hungarian Silver Cross of Merit and the Medal “Merited to Culture Gloria Artis”.
